Map help

Map help

Postby Son of Sorrow » 27 Nov 2013, 04:37

Everything was ok with Radiant 1.4, but then I made the switch to 1.6.4 and it was great. But now whenever I compile a test map they come out full bright.

I could use a bit of help. :okay:

I've tried to google it, and they say a cause could be a leak. But there is none.

Also, has been done with and without lights and also ambient light of any kind.

Ok, after lots of playing around I spliced the BSP compiler from JK2Radiant into Radiant 1.6.4

So now it seems like I may be on my way again, ugh... so many problems...

Yeah, I've had these kinds of problems in the past. This is the first time I've actually figured out how to eliminate all of the bugs so far.

My production speed should increase dramatically now that i've steam rolled through these problems.

Now I want to see if there is a way to make the characters just a bit darker. Because when I stand in the pitch black, they are still easily visible. I wonder if I can set the ambient light to a negative integer... :megusta:

It sounds like you had the issue with 1.6 that most have.
It comes with few BSP options, not all of them in one compile. So you need to take the bsp params from 1.4 and save them in 1.6 basically.
To light up models/players, ambient wont work.
Use _minLight 50, _minVertexLight 50 and _minGridLight 50 (in worldspawn), it should give a dark, but not completely black lighting of players.
(try lower if it is still too bright. Personally I always use 100 on these, it gives a "normal" lighting on characters, but it's probably too bright for you)
The ambient light affects the world in general, it is representing the light which bounces off walls, objects in real life, but it doesnt affect players xD

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. I'll give the _minLight options a go.

What do you guys think of this lighting Idea?

I changed the corner room lights to be colored just so I can more easily distinguish where i'm at.
If you guys like it I can keep that idea, and put more focus on that.

But otherwise how do you feel about brightness?

Center = Easy to see.
Mid = Dim, still able to see.
Corners = Harder to see, but still possible.

In the end I'll have a drop hole into the middle to go down faster.
(Not a straight drop, it requires a little moving around but it's faster)
As well as ways to move up to level 2 in the corners.
There are around 5-6 levels total, each with a different layout, that will lead to the Hunters Base on the top floor.

I like the idea of having those different coloured rooms, the red room seems abit dark though. I'm looking forward to seeing the result :D
